As Abbot Downing's senior managing director of Asset Management, Doug is an advocate for new market opportunities and a thought leader on global economics and investment strategy. He directly oversees the development and implementation of Abbot Downing's investment process, including all aspects of the asset management services provided by the firm for both liquid and illiquid portfolios. As chair of the Investment Committee, Doug is ultimately responsible for the management of client assets across Abbot Downing offices nationwide. During his time in this role, Abbot Downing has twice been recognized as Best National Private Asset Manager by Family Wealth Report Awards (in 2014 and 2016). Doug also serves on the Wells Fargo Wealth and Investment Management division’s Risk Management Committee and the Wells Fargo Investment Institute’s Global Investment Strategy Committee, both of which oversee more than $2 trillion in client assets under advisement.
As author and editor of several Abbot Downing white papers, research reports, and investment periodicals, Doug regularly presents and contributes to industry conferences and research materials. He has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Street.com, City Wire, and other national publications.
Prior to his current position, Doug was a founding member and head of investments for Wells Fargo Family Wealth. Before this, he served as senior director of investments for Wells Fargo Private Bank in California as well as a senior leader within their research group. He joined Wells Fargo in 1990. Prior to joining Wells Fargo, he analyzed real estate properties and private company investments.
Doug graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a master’s degree in business and economics with an emphasis in econometrics and a bachelor's degree in economics. He is a holder of the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation and is a Certified Investment Management Analyst® professional. Doug is also a member of the CFA Institute, the CFA Society of San Francisco, and the Investments and Wealth Institute.
