Legacy and Wealth Planning
Vimala is a director of Legacy and Wealth Planning for Abbot Downing in the Western region. She is responsible for assisting clients to develop comprehensive strategies for their complex financial needs, such as preserving, transferring, and managing their wealth. Vimala specializes in sophisticated multigenerational wealth transfer planning and planned charitable giving. She also has significant experience advising families regarding international tax and wealth transfer planning issues.
Prior to joining Abbot Downing, Vimala was a partner at Withers Bergman LLP, where she was managing director of the San Francisco office. Her practice focused on U.S. and international tax, trust, and wealth transfer planning matters for wealthy U.S. and international families. She worked with trusts and related business structures to preserve, protect, and grow family wealth in a tax efficient manner as well as advised her clients on their philanthropic endeavors.
Vimala earned her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law with a Certificate in Tax Studies. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley.
Vimala is a member of the State Bar of California, New York, and Connecticut, although she is not currently practicing. She is also a member of the American Bar Association, San Francisco Estate Planning Council, and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.
